Fust Survival Resource Gathering: Wood, Stone and Ore

Last updated:

Learn how to gather wood from trees, stone from node mining and ore with a Stone Pickaxe in Fust Survival, plus what each material is used for.

Quick answer

LMB is the swing/gather control. Swing at a tree with the starting tool to gather Wood; a Stone Pickaxe mines Metal Ore and Sulphur Ore from ore nodes, and Stones can come back with the ore. Wood and Stones pay for your first tools and base parts, Metal Ore smelts into Metal Fragments, and Sulphur Ore goes into Gun Powder.

Fust Survival's official description presents the game as one material loop: wash up on the beach with a rock and a torch, gather wood, stone and ore, craft tools, smelt metal in your furnace and build a base worth raiding. Wood, stone and ore are the three raw materials that description names, and each one feeds the next stage.

A grey rock node covered in yellow sulphur crystals in Fust Survival, with Stone and Sulphur Ore gains in the HUD log.

Most of the specific figures below come from a recorded session on the Fust Survival EU#1 [MODDED] server, which displayed a DOUBLE RATES banner. HUD amounts such as "+290 Wood" and "+52 Metal Fragments" are that server's values rather than standard-server yields. The crafting-menu costs quoted here are the values that menu showed during the same session.

Gathering wood

The CONTROLS panel lists LMB as SWING/GATHER, and swinging at a tree with the starting tool is what produced Wood in the session; the HUD logged "+290 Wood" on the hit. Face a tree, use LMB, and the wood lands in your inventory.

Wood is the material that gets spent first. The crafting menu listed early options including the Hammer, Building Plan, Stone Hatchet, Stone Pickaxe and Wooden Spear. The clearest example is the Stone Pickaxe at Wood 200 and Stones 100, a recipe that turns the two stocks you have been collecting into the tool that opens up ore.

Later wood costs are larger and easy to underestimate. The Tool Cupboard, listed under Deployables, needs Wood 1000; while the player carried 200, the CRAFT button read NOT ENOUGH RESOURCES. That button is the quickest check that your stock covers a recipe. Workbench 1 needs Metal Fragments 50 and Wood 500, which is where wood spending and smelted metal meet.

Wood also appears in building work and in the Furnace. Holding the Hammer at a built twig structure brings up the upgrade interaction, and the session logged the upgrade with "+25 Wood" and "Upgraded to Wood". The Furnace footer listed wood as the burning fuel ("Burns 1 wood/5.75s" on that server), so the same pile of wood is drawn on by crafting, building upgrades and smelting.

Gathering stone

Stones are named outright by the opening objectives. The STARTER GOALS panel at spawn lists "Gather 250 Wood" and "Gather 100 Stones", then crafting a Building Plan, placing a foundation, placing a door, placing a Tool Cupboard and placing a sleeping bag. The stone figure matches the Stone Pickaxe's Stones 100 cost, so the goal and the recipe point at the same step: collect stone, craft the pickaxe.

Stones also turn up in the gather log itself. When the player mined the sulphur node with the Stone Pickaxe, a separately verified frame recorded "+670 Sulphur Ore" and "+120 Stones", so a node can return stone as well as ore. Like the other HUD amounts here, that is a double-rates server value.

The supplied recipe evidence gives stone a narrower role than wood. The Stone Pickaxe's 100 Stones is the clear stone cost shown in the session, while the Tool Cupboard and Workbench 1 recipes on the same menu are wood and metal based. Stone is therefore the early gate: the ingredient that unlocks the mining tool, and a material that can come back with the ore once you are using it.

Gathering ore

Ore is the material that needs equipment. Metal Ore and Sulphur Ore are both mined with the Stone Pickaxe, and the pickaxe's menu entry is worth reading closely: Wood 200 and Stones 100, Damage 15, a 2s time and "can make 5". Damage 15 is the tool's own damage stat, and the two-second craft time means the pickaxe is a quick stop once the wood and stone are in hand.

Sulphur Ore has a distinct look: yellow crystal spikes sitting on a grey rock. One hit in the session logged "+60 Sulphur Ore" and "+60 Metal Ore"; a separately verified frame on the sulphur node logged "+670 Sulphur Ore" plus "+120 Stones". The two readings are different moments on the DOUBLE RATES server, so treat both as that server's values rather than standard yields.

Ore's first destination is the Furnace. Its interface has FOR RESOURCES slots for Wood, Metal Ore, Sulfur Ore, HQM Ore and Raw Meat, alongside FUEL and OUTPUT slots and TAKE ALL / LIGHT buttons. After smelting, the inventory received "+52 Metal Fragments", which is the metal half of Workbench 1's 50 Metal Fragments and 500 Wood cost. The furnace guide and smelting guide cover loading, fuel and processing in detail.

Sulphur Ore feeds a different chain. The crafting menu showed Gun Powder as Sulphur 10 plus Charcoal 10 for Gun Powder 10, so sulphur is worth keeping even after your metal needs are covered. Charcoal is the other half of that recipe, and the smelting guide covers the furnace side.

The starter goals as a first route

The STARTER GOALS panel reads as an ordered version of this material loop: collect the two stocks, then spend them on the first building steps.

Checklist

  • Gather 250 Wood

The wood target shown in the STARTER GOALS panel at spawn.

  • Gather 100 Stones

The same figure as the Stone Pickaxe's Stones 100 cost.

  • Craft a Building Plan
  • Place a foundation
  • Place a door
  • Place a Tool Cupboard

The Deployables recipe needs Wood 1000.

  • Place a sleeping bag

Where to go next

Once the basics are in place, the usual next questions are where specific nodes are and how to process ore. Ore locations covers where the ore nodes are found, while the furnace guide and smelting guide cover what happens once ore goes in. The crafting guide and crafting recipes collect the recipes behind the costs quoted here, the tools page covers the early tool set, and base defense continues from the foundation and door goals.
